The Kerem Tunnel allows for a an experience that is unique in terms of hiking and riding.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem's rich past was the main reason why it was the most visited tourist spot during the time of its glory. Elkin said that apart from its historical treasures, modern tourism is also included in the city of Jerusalem. "The launch of the tunnel project is a further part of the development of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem as well as its development into an attractive tourist destination for all kinds of visitors in Israel and throughout the world."


Elkin's ministry, which was also headed the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year throughout Jerusalem's tourism industry and is involved in developing innovative attractions and ventures, that connect the magnificent historical time of our capital city with its future." The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek, which is located to the west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel. It includes the fifth water line to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are some of the ongoing efforts to ensure that the tunnel is secure for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites such as the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium and the historical natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
